Webster
Message
Store User
A
message store user is a normal user with a mailbox directory
(accessible from POP3 and IMAP4 clients) who will be receiving mail
messages addressed to their username. Most users will be message store
users. When defining a message store user, you must specify a
password.
Alias
An
alias user is a recipient address that redirects messages to a normal
message store user (no mailbox directory is created). You may want to
create an alias user when a particular user’s name is commonly
misspelled or is referred to by several versions (for example,
L_Dempster@eudora.com, ld@eudora.com, and Leslie_Dempster@eudora.com
all refer to the same user). When creating an alias user, you are
required to enter an address to redirect mail to.
Inactive
An
inactive user is a mail address that returns an error message for any
messages it receives (no mailbox directory is created). Normally you
define inactive mail addresses when a user leaves the company.
When defining an inactive mail address, you must specify a text
string to be returned to the originator in a non-delivery report
e.g., "Leslie no longer works here").
Send
To
A
send to user is a recipient address that automatically redirects
messages to a server that you specify (no mailbox directory is
created). You can also create a send to address that discards incoming
messages.
Robot
A
robot is a mailbox for a mail agent, such as the list management
agent. The list management agent receives messages, usually
asking to be added to or deleted from lists, carries out these
commands if possible, and returns a response to the sender. When
you expand a local domain, the user accounts that you set-up display
in the right pane of the Management Center main screen with their
appropriate icons.
Distribution
Lists
Distribution
lists allow users to refer to a group of recipients by a common name
(e.g., the Marketing distribution list would contain all Marketing
employees). When users address a message to a distribution list, all
members of the distribution list receive the message.
Shared
Folders
A
shared folder is a mailbox that several users can access to view the
same original messages. However, instead of copying a message to the
mailbox of every distribution list member, the message is placed in a
single mailbox to which multiple users have access.
Shared
folders provide a bulletin board type of service. Like a distribution
list, multiple users can view the same message. You can choose to
create a shared folder which is simply a directory other users can
copy messages to. Or you can create a mailbox and address for the
shared folder, so people can send mail directly to it.
Users
who have access to the shared mailbox or folder are not notified when
a message is placed in the mailbox. Instead, they should periodically
check for new messages. So you may create a distribution list called
sales@ido.net and also a shared folder called SalesBulletin@ido.net.
Important messages that all members should receive and read promptly
should be addressed to the distribution list.
Informational
messages for interested members might be addressed to the Sales shared
folder. This may be especially effective for large messages, as
bandwidth is saved by sending to a shared folder where only one copy
of the message is created.
Note:
All shared folder users have
both read and write access to the folder, so any user may delete
messages in the folder.
